What game had the old 70′s commercial where the kid shouted “You’re the Soul Survivor”?
I seem to remember an old commercial which I think was sometime in the 70′s or early 80′s where some kids were playing a board game and when one of the kids would win someone shouted “You’re the Soul Survivor”!! What game was that???
Stay Alive by Milton Bradley. The commercial ended with a stunned little boy saying, “I’m the sole survivor!” the game is still available but it’s much smaller and not published by Milton Bradley.

Between Heaven and Earth $25.28 A hugely important, beautifully written book. Between Heaven and Earth is vintage Orsi, the work of our leading historian of twentieth-century American Catholicism at the top of his game. –Richard Wightman Fox, University of Southern California, author of Jesus in America: Personal Savior, Cultural Hero, National Obsession A stunning contribution to the field. Not only does this book creatively transcend the old maxim about religion being about the construction of meaning, but it also radically undercuts scholars who disparage the ‘superstitious’ worlds of their subjects. Moreover, in a dizzying, personal narrative Orsi takes us into the hidden places of his own and his family’s soul and spirit–with surgical precision that excises pain to make it available for methodological scrutiny. What is so refreshing about reading Orsi’s work is that it genuinely is literature: it is religious studies as an art form, highly disciplined, superbly executed, gripping in presentation. This is a book that holds the reader. –Catherine L. Albanese, University of California, Santa Barbara, author of America: Religions and Religion Robert Orsi’s Between Heaven and Earth is yet another one of his masterful scholarly achievements in the study of the history of Catholicism in America. I cannot think of anyone writing in the area who has the depth, intellect, creativity, and knowledge of Orsi. –Gary M. Laderman, Emory University, author of Rest in Peace: A Cultural History of Death and the Funeral Home in Twentieth-Century America Orsi has not written a memoir, per se, but has rather found in his own family a rich archive, full of religious experiences that tell stories about theextraordinary meanings ordinary people create in their lives. — Publishers Weekly Religion is ‘not benign, ‘ Orsi warns, but is as richly ambiguous, as fraught with complexity, contradiction and tragedy as the lives of its adherents. By its very nature, religion deals with our deepest l |

Brians Song $26.99 Catch these two historical football films BRiAN’S SONG and RUDY: SPECIAL EDITION now in a DVD 2-Pack.BRIAN’S SONG: Sean Maher (TV’s Party of Five) and Mekhi Phifer (Soul Food) star in this excellent remake of the 1971 Emmy Award-winning drama about the friendship between football players Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers. When Gale Sayers joins the Chicago Bears in 1965, the running back is befriended by fellow rookie Brian Piccolo, a brash young man whose personality is the exact opposite of the stoic Sayers. And their friendship begins, the two compete for starting positions on the team, but Sayers’ talent far outshines Piccolo’s and he quickly rises to the top of the game. When they become roommates, their friendship deepens, and when Sayers injures his knee, it is Piccolo who encourages him to get back in shape and back in the game – if only so Piccolo can compete against him on an even playing field. Both men become better ball players because of – and in spite of – each other, and when Piccolo quickly begins his descent into illness, they form a bond that will last forever.RUDY: All his life, people have told RUDY he’s not good enough, not smart enough, not big enough. But nothing can stop his impossible dream of playing football for Notre Dame. From the time he’s a young boy, RUDY (Sean Astin) is determined to join the Fighting Irish. But his blue-collar family only laughs at his ambitions — they know RUDY will follow his father and brother to the local steel mill. And, for four long years after high school, he does just that. But some dreams won’t die, as RUDY proves when he goes to heroic, occasionally hilarious, lengths to win admission to Notre Dame. Once there, he becomes a walk-on player, serving as little more than a human tackling dummy against the startling players. Bloodied but unbeaten, RUDY wins the respect of legendary coach Ara Parseghian and the other Irish players, |

Browns Town 1964 $15.95 - First time in paperback – In this nostalgic look at Cleveland’s last championship team, sportswriter Terry Pluto tells the remarkable story of the underdog team’s surprise success and the colorful players who made that season so memorable. Pluto movingly reveals the substance of a mythic bond between men and a game, a team and a city–and thus lays bare how present-day pro football has surrendered its soul. — Kirkus Reviews Terry Pluto, perhaps the best American writer of sports books has picked the right team to get nostalgic about. The 1964 NFL champion Cleveland Browns were sort of a combination of the 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers and the mid-’60s St. Louis Cardinals–the former because it was the only championship won by a team that was expected to be a dynasty and the latter because it featured so many people who were as interesting off the field as on. — Houston Chronicle |

Doctor Faustus: The Life of the German Composer Adrian Leverkuhn as Told by a Friend $16.95 John E. Woods is revising our impression of Thomas Mann, masterpiece by masterpiece. –The New Yorker Doctor Faustus is Mann’s deepest artistic gesture. . . . Finely translated by John E. Woods. –The New Republic Thomas Mann’s last great novel, first published in 1947 and now newly rendered into English by acclaimed translator John E. Woods, is a modern reworking of the Faust legend, in which Germany sells its soul to the Devil. Mann’s protagonist, the composer Adrian Leverkuhn, is the flower of German culture, a brilliant, isolated, overreaching figure, his radical new music a breakneck game played by art at the very edge of impossibility. In return for twenty-four years of unparalleled musical accomplishment, he bargains away his soul–and the ability to love his fellow man. Leverkuhn’s life story is a brilliant allegory of the rise of the Third Reich, of Germany’s renunciation of its own humanity and its embrace of ambition and nihilism. It is also Mann’s most profound meditation on the German genius–both national and individual–and the terrible responsibilities of the truly great artist. |

Don’t Tell Columbus $10.18 Sometimes an artist is anointed a legend. Sometimes this artist’s body of work is so consistently lauded, of such ongoing interest and creativity, the audience might be tempted to take the level of craft for granted. Sometimes such an artist, after a time of flying beneath the radar, emerges with a run of stunning material ascending beyond time and genre. Sometimes this artist casts a shadow large enough they are known by just their initials. Graham Parker is such an artist and this is his time.Thirty years into a storied career in rock ‘n’ roll that began with his band The Rumour (pre-saging new wave, pub rock and punk) Graham Parker finds himself at the absolute top of his game and in the midst of a extended creative hot streak. Hot on the heels of the Bloodshot releases Your Country (2004), Songs of No Consequence (2005), the seething digital-only single about Iraq–the now sadly outdated 2000 Funerals –and the blistering live album 103 Degrees in June (2006), Don’t Tell Columbus crackles with desperation and redemption sung with rich, passionate power. And hooks. Lots and lots of effortless hooks. Yes, the new millennium has thus far been very good to GP and music fans reap the rewards.Suffused with the heft of the epic, Don’t Tell Columbus’ lyrical and emotional resonance straddles the Atlantic and evinces GP’s stature as one of the most gifted writers in rock ‘n’ roll. From the personal and metaphorically grand The Other Side of the Reservoir to the overtly political and swinging Stick to the Plan, this album ripples with tension between the melancholic, the urgent and the hopeful. Best of all, it’s wrapped in his gifted brawny pop and blue-eyed soul smarts. Only GP can have you happily humming along to songs swaddled in desperate loneliness and internal mayhem. It is unhealthy, perhaps even obscene, that someone should be able to come up with an album this good this far into their career. |
