Survival-horror games always conjure up thoughts of the two major series’, Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Both have been around for some time and have been terrifying players in their own special way. Of the two, Silent Hill has always been the more psychologically terrifying franchise and very little has changed on that score – a few other elements may have changed but the scares are still there. Silent Hill Homecoming is the fifth in the series, following on from The Room. The premise of the game has the player taking the role of a former resident of a neighboring town to THE Silent Hill who returns home from military service only to find that his younger brother Joshua and father are missing, along with a large proportion of the townsfolk. The mayor spends all of his time digging up corpses in the graveyard and the pervasive mist that shrouds Silent Hill has enveloped his home town. All of the nasties seem to have made their way there as well and the story eventually takes players deep into Silent Hill. Story aside for a moment, there are some significant changes to the game. Silent Hill has always dominated on the console platform and this title was obviously coded for console. The look of the entire affair isn’t quite as defined as a standard PC title, a trait that can be forgiven since it makes up for this in other ways. The film-grain effect of the cut-scenes and actual gameplay are very effective when taken along with the atmospheric sound effects and music score. The overall finished product is a dark and creepy affair that consumes a player’s attention and draws them into the game world like only Silent Hill can. The auditory cues and effects are what make Homecoming as scary as it is. Wandering around a deserted hospital in the initial nightmare sequence is a good indicator of the creepiness to come, with the sounds of glass crunching underfoot and scattered debris being kicked around by players inspiring minor heart attacks. Changes in music and sound cues are perceived on an almost subconscious level resulting in a few cheap scares courtesy of the developers. Another element hat has improved is the physics used by the game. There are far more movable, albeit useless, objects in the stands that can be knocked over and cans and other items that can be moved by the player. This amplifies terror in a tense situation if players bump into the wrong object. Control on the PC is very decent for what is essentially a port. The keys cannot be remapped as extensively as we’d like, but unlike Silent Hill 4, Homecoming is very playable using the mouse and keyboard configuration. The camera method has also changed from the static camera that used to pervade the series to a more free-form one. Some areas will still limit views from particular views to some degree, but the overall change can be viewed as negative since not knowing or being able to see what is creeping up behind one was a major scare factor of previous games. Speaking of scares, Silent Hill Homecoming does its level best to make players fudge their underwear at every opportunity. The developers have seen fit to make play incredibly creepy with the flashlight off and even worse when it is on. Some creatures are attracted to the light, sometimes forcing players to stumble about in darkness. As freaky as this experience is, it is still preferable to being rushed by four nurses at once. The last element that has undergone changes is that of combat. A dodge is now available to players, helping the players out somewhat, but it does not render combat too simple. Fighting is relatively simple, with the two mouse buttons being fast and the strong attack can be charged. It also serves as an execution of sorts, should players be lucky enough to knock an enemy down. Most of what is mentioned above is positive, even though they are changes from the norm. The gameplay is still Silent Hill through and through. There seems to be a more Western influence to the game this time around but it does not detract from the psychological scare-factor in any way. The fact that Steam is required for installation is a little disturbing, but there are more and more games being slated for Steam releases. The storyline is great, the gameplay has been streamlined and the look-and-feel is at once both familiar and different. It may not come right up to scratch as far as the PC goes, but this can be forgiven for the experience that it gives to the player. This is the sort of game that you’ll feel uncomfortable playing at night with the lights off and that is exactly what we want.
